Win:Verlander(8-6) Loss:Shoemaker(2-3)
Homeruns- C.Cron(8th), J.Altuve(14th), C.Correa(15th), Y.Gurriel(12th)
Justin Verlander whiffed 14 batters and second baseman Jose Altuve had 5 hits
and 2 RBI at Minute Maid Park where the Houston Astros beat the Los
Angeles(AL) Angels by the score of 7 to 2.
Altuve had a good day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, clubbed a
solo home run in the 4th inning, laced a base-hit in the 5th inning, banged
out a single scoring a run in the 7th inning and lined a one-base hit in the
8th inning. Houston had a total of 13 hits for the game.
The victory was credited to Verlander(8-6) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Matt Shoemaker(2-3) was given the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 5 and
1/3 innings of work.
When asked about his strikeout total for the game, Verlander offered, 'The
fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally up the strikeout
totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them busy this afternoon
- of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

| MIAMI AT PITTSBURGH
Marlins......... 3 0 1 2 0 0 1 0 1 - 8 12 1
Pirates......... 0 0 1 1 0 3 5 3 - 13 13 1
Win:Benoit(1-2) Loss:McGowan(1-1)
Homeruns- G.Stanton(25th), M.Ozuna-2(15th), A.McCutchen-2(22nd),
F.Cervelli(7th)
Andrew McCutchen cracked 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the Miami Marlins by a score of 13 to 8.
It seemed that Miami pitching was serving up softballs for McCutchen to hit.
He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 6th inning, ripped a single which
brought home a run in the 7th inning and belted a three-run homer in the 8th
inning. Miami was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5 separate
innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that pitching is
also needed to win ballgames.
Joaquin Benoit(1-2) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Dustin McGowan(1-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and
1 walk in 1 and 1/3 innings.
McCutchen said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
today. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'
