Boston jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 4th inning scoring a single

At Guaranteed Rate Fld, the Chicago (AL) faithful were treated to an
intriguing pitcher's duel. Lucas Giolito(4-6) finally bested his Detroit
counterpart, Buck Farmer(1-5), by the score of 4 to 0.
Detroit was unable to claim the lead after Chicago (AL) went ahead in the 3rd
inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. That scoring would be all that
was needed. Chicago (AL) had only 4 hits for the afternoon.
Giolito got help from Danny Farquhar who was credited with his 4th save. The
loss was charged to Farmer. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
The Chicago (AL) ballclub's record now stands at 18-32. With this loss,
Detroit has a 3-7 record of late, 21-30 overall.

The Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Royals locked up in an exciting
one-run game at Progressive Field. The final score was the Cleveland Indians
4, the Kansas City Royals 3.
Kansas City found themselves trailing quickly as the Cleveland bats came
through in the first inning scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. Kansas City tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
The winning pitcher was Mike Clevinger(6-3) who allowed 2 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Clevinger was helped out by Cody Allen who recorded his 17th save.
Danny Duffy(4-5) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 1/3
of an inning.
'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Ned Yost said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'

German Marquez retired 10 batters on strikeouts and Carlos Gonzalez added four
ribbies to his seasonal total with one swing of the bat as the Colorado
Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 9 to 1.
Gonzalez enjoyed a big day at the plate. He launched a Grand Slam homerun in
the 1st inning and doubled bringing in a run in the 4th inning. Colorado
banged out 11 hits on the afternoon.
Marquez(5-2) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Carlos Martinez(7-4)
took the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 3 and 2/3 innings.
The Colorado fans were thrilled by the performance put forth by Marquez, but
it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10
strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Bud
Black said following the game.
