Center fielder Mikie Mahtook smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Detroit
Tigers defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6 to 1 at Comerica
Park.
Mahtook enjoyed a big day at the plate. He laced a base-knock in the 2nd
inning, bombed a two-run dinger in the 4th inning and smashed a solo-shot out
of the park in the 6th inning. Detroit out-hit Boston for the game, 14 hits
to 9.
Matt Boyd(2-0) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Boyd
got relief help from Daniel Stumpf who gained credit for his 1st save. Rick
Porcello(0-1) was given the loss. Although losing the contest, he whiffed 9
batters in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Whit Merrifield had 3 base hits as the Kansas City Royals topped the Oakland
Athletics by a score of 6 to 1 at Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning when they
came up with 2 runs on 4 hits. For the game Kansas City out-hit Oakland 15
to 9.
Jake Junis(1-1) allowed 1 run in 5 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Paul Blackburn(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 11 hits and 1

Marwin Gonzalez blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI at SAFECO Field as the Houston
Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 7 to 5.
Seattle was unable to recover after Houston went ahead in the top of the 2nd
inning as they scored 3 runs on 2 base hits. The critical plate appearance
was by Gonzalez who quieted the home crowd when he clubbed a three-run home
run. Houston managed 12 hits in their victory.
Brad Peacock(1-1) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Ken
Giles recorded his 2nd save. The losing pitcher was Erasmo Ramirez(0-2). He
was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' A.J. Hinch said after the game. 'Peacock did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
