At Chase Field, the Arizona faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Zack Greinke(1-0) finally bested his San Francisco counterpart,
Madison Bumgarner(0-1), by the score of 3 to 0.
Arizona scored all of the necessary runs in the 1st inning when they tallied 3
runs on 3 hits. That early scoring held up. Neither team managed to score
after the 1st inning.
Greinke got relief help from Fernando Rodney who gained credit for his 1st
save. The losing pitcher was Bumgarner. He gave up 5 hits and no walks in 4
innings.

Carlos Martinez mowed down 10 Chicago (NL) batters at Busch Stadium where the
St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago (NL) Cubs 2 to 0.
Martinez(1-0) pitched a solid game. He allowed just 6 hits and 3 walks in 7
and 1/3 innings. St. Louis managed only 6 hits on the night.
Trevor Rosenthal recorded his 1st save. Kyle Hendricks(0-1) was charged with
the loss. He gave up 1 run and 3 hits in 4 innings. The St. Louis fans were
thrilled by the performance put forth by Martinez, but it was clearly his
strikeouts that they enjoyed most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans
showed him their appreciation with a loud cheer.' Mike Matheny said following
the game.

Luis Severino struck out 10 batters as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the
Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 4 to 2.
Severino(1-0) looked very much in control throughout the day. He allowed only
5 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3 innings. Tampa Bay threatened in the 9th but
New York (AL) was able to put down the rally.
Severino got help from David Robertson who earned his 1st save. Chase
Whitley(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 1
hit without retiring a batter.
Severino, when asked about his 10 strikeout performance noted, 'The important
thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team?
But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'
