Kevin Gross threw a 3 hit shutout at Three Rivers Stadium as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 1 to 0.
Gross(7-8) was virtually untouchable. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings improving his ERA from 3.31 to 3.06. Pittsburgh went down quietly in
the bottom of the 9th.
Lee Tunnell(6-3) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 1 run and 5 hits in 8
innings.

Carmelo Martinez had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the San Diego Padres came back
to win one over San Francisco Giants, 5 to 4.
San Diego scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning plating 2
runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Gerry Davis started
the attack as he doubled. Tim Flannery followed next and he was hit by a
pitch. Mark Davis then let one slip out of his hand for a wild pitch. One
out later, Steve Garvey stepped up to the plate and he was walked
intentionally to load the bases. Martinez came up to bat and lined a
one-base hit driving home two runs. This was a game of many highs and lows
for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.
Lamarr Hoyt(6-6) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Rich
Gossage earned the save, his 15th. Davis(4-3) was hit with the loss in
relief.
'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Martinez said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'

Second baseman Tom Herr had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the floundering Chicago (NL) Cubs in 10 innings by a score of 5 to 2
at Wrigley Field.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis ended up
winning it in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Willie McGee got
things going when he laced a base-knock. One out later, Herr came to the
plate and doubled. Mike Jorgensen then reached on an error. Andy Van Slyke
came up and he launched a three-run homer. St. Louis finished with 13 hits
in the victory.
The winning pitcher was Jeff Lahti(5-1) who allowed 1 run in 1 and 2/3
innings. Ken Dayley got the save, his 2nd. Warren Brusstar(1-4) was hit with
the loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an
earned run in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
