The deciding run was scored by California in the bottom of the 8th. Bob Boone reached on an error. Two outs later Rod Carew came to bat and laced a one-base hit scoring the run. Chicago (AL) had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Clements got help from Stew Cliburn who was credited with his 2nd save. Richard Dotson(4-4) ended up with the loss. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 8 innings of work.
