Catcher Ernie Whitt connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI and Dave Stieb
threw a 3 hitter at Exhibition Stadium as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the
Cleveland Indians 7 to 2.
Toronto went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning plating 2 runs on
4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Willie Upshaw was the sparkplug when
he laced a one-base hit. Whitt came to the plate and popped a two-run clout
over the fence. Toronto finished with 14 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Stieb(7-5) who went the distance, allowing 2 runs.
Don Schulze(3-6) absorbed the loss. He was touched for 12 hits and 2 walks
in 5 and 2/3 innings.
This win by Toronto continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten
games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are 29-17. With the

Tom Seaver came through with a solid 7 innings as the Chicago (AL) White Sox
defeated the Kansas City Royals in 10 innings 6 to 5 at Comiskey Park.
The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Finally, Chicago (AL)
prevailed in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Joel Skinner
initiated the scoring spurt when he doubled. Joe Desa followed and he
clubbed a two-run home run making Chicago (AL) victorious to the delight of
the the home town crowd. The game was a wild affair with the lead changing
hands 5 times.
The win went to Bob James(1-3) who allowed 4 runs in 3 innings. Joe
Beckwith(2-1) was given the loss in relief. 'Wow. That's about all I can
think to say.' said Tony LaRussa following the victory. 'If ever a team
needed a win, it was us.'
