Darryl Motley had 2 base hits at Comiskey Park where the Kansas City Royals
beat the floundering Chicago (AL) White Sox by the score of 5 to 4.
Bret Saberhagen(3-6) contributed a pedestrian performance to earn the win. He
went 7 innings allowing 9 hits and 1 walk. Both teams finished the game with
9 hits.
Saberhagen got help from Dan Quisenberry who was credited with his 5th save.
Britt Burns(5-6) ended up with the loss. 'I didn't have my best stuff but
sometimes you just get lucky,' Saberhagen said, 'this was one of those
times.'

One run was the difference at Tiger Stadium as the Detroit Tigers defeated the
Oakland Athletics in 10 innings 4 to 3.
Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Detroit was
victorious in the 10th inning. After two outs Lou Whitaker smashed a
solo-shot out of the park giving Detroit the win as 24,676 happy fans
joyfully celebrated. Detroit had 8 hits overall, while Oakland had 5.
Juan Berenguer(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 and 2/3 innings and

In a two run game the Seattle Mariners got by the Baltimore Orioles by the
score of 4 to 2.
Seattle took the lead for good in the 4th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base
hits. After an out was recorded, Gorman Thomas keyed the rally when he drew
a walk. Al Cowens followed and he stroked a single. Dave Henderson then
delivered a base-hit scoring a single run. Jim Presley was up next and he
ripped a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Seattle totaled 8
hits on the night.
The winning pitcher was Matt Young(5-4) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 2/3
innings. Roy Thomas earned the save, his 5th. Sammy Stewart(5-2) absorbed
the loss.
