35,087 fans were treated to a fine game at Riverfront Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Houston Astros won by the
slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.
Houston took the lead for keeps in the top of the 6th inning when they came up
with 2 runs on 3 hits. Cincinnati made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.
Mike Scott(2-2) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Dave Smith
recorded the save, his 6th. Ron Robinson(1-6) suffered the loss. Pete Rose
was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know
why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

The Pittsburgh Pirates bested the Los Angeles Dodgers by a 4 to 1 score at
Dodger Stadium.
Pittsburgh went ahead for good in the top of the 2nd inning plating one
baserunner. Pittsburgh had 10 hits overall, while Los Angeles had 7.
Lee Tunnell(3-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Jose
Deleon earned the save, his 5th. The losing pitcher was Orel Hershiser(6-1).
Wth the win Pittsburgh now has a record of 12-16. With the loss Los Angeles

The St. Louis Cardinals edged the San Francisco Giants in 12 innings at
Candlestick Park by the score of 3 to 2.
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. St. Louis came out on
top in the 12th inning. After an out was recorded, Tom Herr stroked a
base-hit. One out later, Frank Williams then threw a pitch that the catcher
muffed. Jack Clark then drew a walk. Cesar Cedeno was up next and he ripped
a single scoring the run. Neither team was able to score until the 6th
inning.
The victory was credited to Neil Allen(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Williams(1-2) ended up with the loss in relief.
