Floyd Rayford had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the streaking Baltimore Orioles beat the
floundering Kansas City Royals in 10 innings by a score of 11 to 8.
Both teams had scored 8 runs after nine full innings. Baltimore ended up
winning it in the 10th inning. John Shelby led off and started the rally
when he lined a one-base hit. Alan Wiggins was next and he banged out a
single. Wayne Gross then hit a sacrifice fly scoring a run. Wiggins
proceeded to steal third base. Fritzie Connally came to the plate and
doubled bringing in another run. Mike Young added to the rally and reached
on an error. Rayford stepped into the batter's box and he ripped a base-hit
scoring the final run of the inning. Baltimore out-hit Kansas City for the
game, 18 hits to 13.
Nate Snell(2-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.
Dan Quisenberry(0-1) was the loser in relief. He was knocked around pretty
good, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings.
Baltimore extended their winning streak to 8 games. Earl Weaver was thrilled
following the game -- 'We're really on a roll now. These guys are playing
their hearts out and I couldn't be happier for them!'

Dick Schofield lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI and Don Sutton
hurled a fine complete game shutout at Fenway Park as the California Angels
beat the Boston Red Sox by the count of 7 to 0.
Sutton(3-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up
much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 5.53 to 4.53.
California totaled 12 hits on the night.
Roger Clemens(4-2) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 9
hits and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

In a game for the baseball purist, Tom Seaver(4-1) and Jerry Reed(2-3) squared
off in a tense pitching duel, Chicago (AL) White Sox finally emerged
victorious over Cleveland Indians, 3 to 1.
Seaver pitched a solid game. He was reached for 8 hits and 1 walk in 6 and
1/3 innings. Chicago (AL) rapped out 8 hits for the night.

In an entertaining game at Arlington Stadium the final score was the Texas
Rangers 6, the Detroit Tigers 3.
Texas jumped on top of Detroit in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they
tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. Both teams finished the game with 11 hits.
Dickie Noles(2-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 innings and allowing
2 runs. Noles was helped out by Greg Harris who recorded his 4th save. Walt
Terrell(2-4) ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and
5 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Texas now has a record of 12-13. With the loss, Detroit has a record of 5-5
lately, 14-10 overall.
