The California Angels put a halt to their 5 game losing streak and edged the
Boston Red Sox at Anaheim Stadium by the score of 4 to 3.
California came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning with 2
runs on 2 hits. Brian Downing was the sparkplug when he cracked a solo
homerun. After an out was recorded, Ruppert Jones came up and he blasted a
solo shot. Boston had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Don Sutton(1-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Donnie Moore recorded the save, his 2nd. Bob Ojeda(0-4) was
the loser.
'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Sutton said. 'It's great to be back on
the winning side of things.'

Right fielder Carmelo Castillo lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI
as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Kansas City Royals by the score of 4 to
2 at Royals Stadium.
Cleveland tallied 3 runs in the 4th inning. The crucial at-bat was provided
by Castillo who silenced Royals Stadium as he belted a three-run homer.
Kansas City went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th.
Jamie Easterly(1-5) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Bryan
Clark was credited with his 2nd save. Charlie Leibrandt(1-2) was hit with
the loss.

At The Kingdome the Seattle Mariners outscored the Milwaukee Brewers 4 to
1.
Seattle did all of it's offensive work in the 1st inning when they came up
with 4 runs on 5 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Jim
Beattie(2-1) and Seattle. That was all the run support Beattie required.
The pitchers took over after the 3rd inning as neither team was able to score
again.
Roy Thomas got the save, his 1st. Teddy Higuera(2-2) was tagged with the
loss. He allowed 4 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings.

Right fielder Jesse Barfield had 2 base hits as the Toronto Blue Jays bested
the Oakland Athletics 4 to 2 at Oakland Co Stadium.
Toronto started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the
first plating 3 runs using 2 hits. Lloyd Moseby started the inning off right
when he drew a walk. Moseby got a good lead and stole second. Tony
Fernandez got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.
Barfield was up next and he delivered a one-base hit bringing in a run.
George Bell stepped into the box and doubled. Cliff Johnson added to the
outburst and drew a walk to load the bases. Ernie Whitt dug into the batters
box next, but he struck out. Garth Iorg then drew a walk plating one more
runner. Jeff Burroughs stepped in and he drew a walk scoring the final run
of the inning. That was all the runs Jimmy Key(3-1) needed. Toronto had
just 5 hits for the night.
Tom Henke preserved the game for Key, recording his his 3rd save. Tim
Birtsas(1-1) was given the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits in 2/3 of
an inning.
