Phil Bradley lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Seattle
Mariners defeated the California Angels 4 to 2 at The Kingdome.
Seattle had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 4th inning. After an
out was recorded, Bradley keyed the rally when he banged out a single. After
another out, Gorman Thomas came up and he popped a two-run clout over the
fence. Despite losing, California out-hit Seattle 11 to 5.
Matt Young(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Ed Nunez was credited with his 4th save. Mike Witt(1-4) absorbed the loss.
He allowed just 4 runs and 5 hits in 8 innings.
With this win, Seattle has a 10-9 record. They have been 6-4 lately.
California has a record of 5-14, worst in the division after the loss.

Mike Young homered and had 2 RBI at Memorial Stadium where the Baltimore
Orioles beat the Cleveland Indians 3 to 2.
Mike Boddicker(4-1) gave a fine effort for Baltimore. He surrendered 5 hits
and no walks in 6 innings. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their rally
came up short.
Don Aase recorded the save, his 2nd. Vern Ruhle(1-1) was hit with the loss.
Pat Corrales was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

Designated hitter Johnny Grubb smashed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Frank
Tanana was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 10
to 1 at County Stadium.
Grubb had a big day at the plate. He doubled bringing home two baserunners in
the 2nd inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 7th inning and smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 8th inning. Detroit finished with 17 hits in
the victory.
Tanana(4-2) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Ray
Burris(1-1) was given the loss. By surrending 5 runs in 6 innings his ERA
jumped from 1.32 to 3.20.
'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Grubb said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'

Dwight Evans touched them all as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Kansas City
Royals by a score of 3 to 2 at Fenway Park.
Boston came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the help of 3
hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Tony Armas who brought a roar
from the partisan Fenway Park fans when he doubled which was good for two
runs. Bruce Kison was perfect in relief and gained credit for his 4th save.
