Frank Tanana mowed down 11 Kansas City batters as the Detroit Tigers topped
the Kansas City Royals by a score of 7 to 4 at Royals Stadium.
Tanana(2-0) gave Detroit a solid outing. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in
7 and 2/3 innings. Detroit banged out 8 hits on the afternoon.
Doug Bair preserved the game for Tanana, recording his his 1st save. The
losing pitcher was Bret Saberhagen(0-1). Detroit knocked him around a bit,
as he gave up 7 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings.
'He was really impressive today,' Saberhagen said of his counterpart. 'Our
guys were just swinging at air.'

Center fielder Paul Householder knocked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the
Milwaukee Brewers staged a dramatic comeback over the Texas Rangers by a
score of 9 to 5 at Arlington Stadium.
Milwaukee won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 5
runners on 6 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Ted Simmons who
deflated the crowd as he rifled a three-run blast. Texas was out-hit by
Milwaukee, 16 hits to 10.
Bob Gibson(1-0) allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Greg Harris(0-1) was the loser in relief. 'I pin this one on my own
shoulders,' Harris said. 'The bottom line is I didn't get the job done. Our
fans deserve better than this.'
