Bob Moose threw a 3 hitter and third baseman Richie Hebner had 2 base hits as
the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled out a win over the San Francisco Giants by a
score of 4 to 3 at Forbes Field.
The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. Gene Alley lined a
base-hit. One out later, Moose stepped in and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Matty Alou then was walked intentionally. Hebner followed and he doubled
giving Pittsburgh the victory and sending the 24,913 home-town fans home
happy. Pittsburgh banged out 11 hits on the afternoon.
Moose(1-0) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Gaylord
Perry(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He got hammered, allowing 11 hits and 3
walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.
