Center fielder Reggie Smith had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the blistering-hot Boston
Red Sox smashed the overmatched Washington Senators, 22 to 5.
Smith propelled Boston to victory. He doubled bringing in two baserunners in
the 1st inning, doubled scoring a run in the 3rd inning, cleared the fences
for a two-run home run in the 5th inning and doubled in the 7th inning.
Boston bats were hot in the 1st inning with 5 runs on 3 hits and the 3rd
inning which saw them plate 10 runs on 8 hits. Boston out-hit Washington for
the game, 19 hits to 7.
Lee Stange(16-5) allowed 3 runs in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. Jim
Shellenback(10-13) was charged with the loss. 'I was in my hotel room the
other night, working on my swing and made some adjustments,' Smith said. 'I'm
always working on it. If they are getting you out certain ways, you've got to
make changes.'

51,317 fans watched an exciting game at Memorial Stadium. The Detroit Tigers
topped the Baltimore Orioles by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
The game was decided in the top of the 8th inning. Willie Horton laced a
base-hit. Bill Freehan next to the plate and he laced a single. Two outs
later Jim Northrup came up and he doubled scoring the run. Baltimore
threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
Mike Kilkenny(18-13) got the win allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Don
McMahon got the save, his 8th. Mike Cuellar(27-14) was tagged with the loss.
He allowed 10 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.
