Reggie Smith had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox won in dramatic fashion
over the New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 5 to 4 at Fenway Park.
Boston won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs. George Thomas led off and started the attack as he drew a walk.
George Scott next to the plate and he blasted a two-run home run giving
Boston the victory and sending the 10,560 home-town fans home happy. Boston
rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.
The win was credited to Vicente Romo(8-6) who went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing
no runs. Fritz Peterson(21-15) took the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks
in 8 innings.

Mickey Lolich whiffed 11 batters at Tiger Stadium as the Detroit Tigers beat
the Washington Senators by the count of 1 to 0.
Lolich(18-16) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Washington
hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9
innings. Detroit had only 4 hits for the game.
Dick Bosman(19-10) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered
just 4 hits and no walks. The Detroit fans were thrilled by the performance
put forth by Lolich, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed
most. 'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation
with a loud cheer.' Mayo Smith said following the game.

Cleveland took the lead off Mike Cuellar in the first inning plating an

was out-hit by Cleveland, 8 hits to 4.

Odom hurled a 3 hitter as the phenomenal Oakland Athletics beat the

the inning off right when he drew a walk. Jackson followed and he cracked a
two-run shot. Oakland finished with just 6 hits in the victory.
Odom(19-15), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Andy
Messersmith(16-16) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 7
