Mike Cuellar pitched a complete game as the very potent Baltimore Orioles beat
the New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 3 to 2.
New York (AL) never recovered after Baltimore took the lead in the bottom of
the 7th inning scoring one runner. New York (AL) could do no damage in the
9th.
Cuellar(27-12) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. The loss was
charged to Fritz Peterson(21-14). He surrendered just 6 hits and no walks in
8 innings.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Earl Weaver said after the game. 'Cuellar did not have command
of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'

Bill Voss had 4 hits and 5 RBI and Andy Messersmith went the distance as the
California Angels bested the Oakland Athletics 8 to 4 at Anaheim
Stadium.
Voss enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 4th inning, ripped a single in the 6th inning, slapped a
one-base hit plating two runs in the 7th inning and banged out a base-hit
resulting in a run in the 8th inning. California totaled 13 hits on the
afternoon.
Messersmith(16-15), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. The
losing pitcher was Blue Moon Odom(18-15). He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 13 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
California now has a record of 60-92. Even with the loss, Oakland still has a
nice 9-1 record in recent weeks. They are 89-63 on the season.
