Right fielder Bobby Murcer ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Al Downing
hurled a 4 hitter at Yankee Stadium as the New York (AL) Yankees beat the
Boston Red Sox in 10 innings 5 to 2.
The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. Finally, New York (AL)
prevailed in the 10th inning. Downing led off and he smacked a single.
After an out was recorded, Jerry Kenney stepped in and he delivered a
one-base hit. Kenney was safe on a stolen base. Murcer was up next and he
lofted a three-run bomb resulting in an exciting win for New York (AL) and a
wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. New York (AL) finished
with 10 hits in the victory.
Downing(8-10) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Vicente
Romo(7-6) ended up with the loss in relief. He was not very effective,
surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Murcer said. 'We
played well together as a team.'

Dave Leonhard didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning and Davey Johnson had 2
base hits and 2 RBI at Memorial Stadium as the strong Baltimore Orioles beat
the Cleveland Indians by the count of 4 to 1.
Leonhard(10-5) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 2
hits and 2 walks in 8 innings. The right-handed Leonhard lost his no-hit bid
when Jose Cardenal singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Baltimore had 9
hits for the night while Cleveland had 2.
Dick Hall got the save, his 7th. Stan Williams(7-18) was the loser. He was

Casey Cox allowed Ted Williams to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
and Mike Epstein cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the potent Washington
Senators topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to 3 at R.F.K.
Stadium.
Washington drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning
with 3 runs on 2 base hits. Del Unser got things going when he drew a walk.
One out later, Frank Howard followed, but he was set down on strikes.
Epstein then bombed a two-run dinger. Ken McMullen followed next and he
smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'. Washington totaled 9 hits on the night.
Cox(13-9) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. The losing pitcher
was Earl Wilson(12-11). He surrended 3 homeruns in his 6 and 1/3 innings.
