Tom Griffin reeled off a total of 12 strikeouts and center fielder Jim Wynn
hit a homerun as the Houston Astros bested the San Diego Padres 2 to 1 at The
Astrodome.
Griffin(10-7) gave Houston a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just 7
hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. San Diego had a chance to come back in the
9th but they came up short.
Clay Kirby(7-17) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings
giving up 6 hits and 5 walks. Preston Gomez was upset after the game. 'I
don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said.
'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in
the rule book.'

Seattle Pilots 11 to 6 at Sicks Stadium.

In a dramatic ending the Chicago (AL) White Sox staged a comeback and held on
to win over the Seattle Pilots by the count of 11 to 9.
Chicago (AL) had the winning rally in the 9th inning scoring 4 runners on 5
hits. The big moment was provided by Carlos May who helped quiet the crowd
when he rifled a three-run blast. Chicago (AL) banged out 14 hits on the
night.
Dan Osinski(11-3) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Osinski
was helped out by Gary Bell who recorded his 1st save. The losing pitcher
was Bob Locker(5-4) in relief.
'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Bill Melton said. 'If you
just keep trying good things can happen!'
