Steve Carlton struck out 10 batters as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the
Cincinnati Reds by the score of 12 to 7 at Crosley Field.
Carlton(19-11) had a fairly solid outing. He allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 8
and 1/3 innings and allowed 3 gopher balls. The St. Louis offense smacked
the Cincinnati pitching staff around, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.
Jim Merritt(9-8) was charged with the loss. St. Louis scored big getting 7
runs off him in 6 innings. 'He was really impressive tonight,' Merritt said
of his counterpart. 'Our guys were just swinging at air.'

Mike McCormick threw a 3 hit shutout at Candlestick Park where the San
Francisco Giants beat the New York (NL) Mets 8 to 0.
McCormick(10-7) was virtually untouchable. He gave up just 3 hits and 1 walk
in 9 innings. San Francisco managed 8 hits in their victory.
Jerry Koosman(13-16) took the loss. He was pinned with the loss despite not
allowing an earned run in his 7 innings of work.
'He was moving it around and spotting it very well.' Gil Hodges said.
McCormick pitched a great game. He deserves all the credit.'

Cookie Rojas slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 innings 12 to 9 at Dodger
Stadium.
The game was deadlocked at 9 after nine full innings. Philadelphia came out
on top in the 10th inning. After two were out John Briggs started the rally
when he delivered a base-hit. Dick Allen stepped into the batter's box and
he cracked a two-run shot. Johnny Callison then hit a bases-empty home run.
Overall Philadelphia out-hit Los Angeles 16 to 12.
Turk Farrell(7-5) allowed no runs in 3 innings, and picked up the victory.
Pete Mikkelsen(6-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. He pitched 1 inning
allowing 1 hit and no walks.
