One run was the difference at Fenway Park as the Kansas City Royals defeated
the Boston Red Sox 4 to 3.
Kansas City brought 2 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they came
up with 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Jerry Adair keyed the rally
when he stroked a base-hit. After another out, Jackie Hernandez stepped up
to the plate and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.
Boston made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.
Mike Hedlund(12-7) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Moe
Drabowsky recorded his 8th save. Ray Culp(11-18) took the loss. Dick
Williams was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'

Chicago (NL) Cubs 7 to 3 at Wrigley Field.

Center fielder Larry Hisle hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI and Woodie Fryman had a
complete game as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the San Francisco Giants in
10 innings by a score of 4 to 1 at Candlestick Park.
The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. Philadelphia came out on top
in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, John Briggs got things
rolling when he slapped a base-hit. Bob Skinner then called for a steal
which was successful. Dick Allen then doubled knocking in a run. Johnny
Callison followed next and he hit a single. One out later, Hisle came to bat
and doubled driving in another run. Cookie Rojas joined his teammates in the
uprising and was walked intentionally. Mike Ryan was next and he banged out
a single to load the bases. Don Money then drew a walk scoring the final run
of the inning. Philadelphia banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.
Fryman(13-14) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Gaylord
Perry(19-13) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 4 walks in
9 and 1/3 innings.
