Bobby Murcer homered and had 2 RBI and Fritz Peterson carried a no-hitter into
the 7th inning as the New York (AL) Yankees defeated the struggling Chicago
(AL) White Sox by the score of 8 to 1 at Yankee Stadium.
Peterson(17-12) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Chicago (AL)
offense. He allowed only 1 hit and 3 walks in 9 innings. The left-handed
Peterson had his no-hit bid broken up by Carlos May who homered with nobody
out in the 7th inning. New York (AL) managed 7 hits in their victory.
Tommy John(11-13) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks in 5
innings.

The Cleveland Indians nipped the lifeless California Angels 4 to 3 at
Municipal Stadium in a hard fought contest.
Dick Ellsworth(4-5) came on to close the door tight in relief. No one got on
base in his 1 inning. California tried unsuccessfully to come back in the
9th.
Ellsworth was helped out by Horacio Pina who recorded his 5th save. Andy
Messersmith(13-12) absorbed the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 7 and
1/3 innings.

Mike Fiore had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Kansas City Royals bested the
Boston Red Sox 8 to 4 at Fenway Park.
Boston fell behind quickly as the Kansas City offense came through in the
first inning when they tallied 3 runs on 1 hit. The crucial at-bat was
provided by Ed Kirkpatrick who quieted the crowd when he smacked a three-run
homer. Both teams totaled 9 hits on the night.
The victory was credited to Wally Bunker(7-25) who went 8 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Sonny Siebert(15-10) was tagged with the loss. He
surrendered 6 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings.

Mickey Lolich pitched a 3 hitter as the Detroit Tigers beat the Oakland
Athletics by a score of 4 to 2.
Lolich(15-12) was virtually untouchable. He surrendered only 3 hits and no
walks in 9 innings. Lolich chalked up 10 strikeouts. Detroit had 7 hits for
the night.
Blue Moon Odom(15-12) suffered the loss. He served up 4 gopher balls in 7
innings. Hank Bauer was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but
did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start
