35,271 fans watched an exciting game at Metropolitan Stadium. The very strong
Washington Senators topped the Minnesota Twins by the slimmest of margins, 5
to 4.
Washington had 2 runs cross the plate in the top of the 6th inning. The
highlight belonged to Bernie Allen who deflated the crowd as he bombed a
two-run dinger. Minnesota had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came
up short.
The winning pitcher was Jim Hannan(6-4) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings.
Dennis Higgins recorded his 12th save. Dean Chance(6-3) was hit with the
loss. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 80-50. With the loss Minnesota
now has a record of 66-61.

Mack Jones lofted one into the 'cheap seats' at Dodger Stadium where the
Montreal Expos beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 2 to 1.
Montreal scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning. Jones began things off
when he lofted a solo-blast 'downtown'. Coco Laboy was next and he hit a
bases-empty home run. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until
the 7th inning.
The win was credited to Gary Waslewski(6-13) who went 8 and 2/3 innings
allowing 1 run. Dan McGinn earned his 6th save. Don Sutton(12-14) was the
losing pitcher.

Juan Marichal tossed a shutout as the San Francisco Giants defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 2 to 0 at Candlestick
Park.
Marichal(21-9) looked very much in control throughout the day. He was stingy
on the mound, allowing just 8 hits and no walks in 9 innings. San Francisco
won despite being out-hit by Philadelphia 8 hits to 3.
Grant Jackson(11-19) was hit with the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he
did not allow an earned run in his 8 innings of work.

Chicago (NL) Cubs broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 4
to 3 win over the Cincinnati Reds and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.
The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. Billy Williams drew a
walk. Ron Santo came next and he drew a walk. Ernie Banks then slapped a
one-base hit resulting in an exciting win for Chicago (NL) and a wild
post-game celebration by the home town fans. Both teams finished the game
with 9 hits.
The victory went to Ted Abernathy(5-4) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
Gary Nolan(13-10) took the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 8 hits in 8
innings.
