The Boston Red Sox edged the Chicago (AL) White Sox at Fenway Park by the
score of 6 to 5.
Boston took the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring one
runner utilizing 4 base hits. Chicago (AL) made it exciting in the 9th, but
they were unable to push the needed runs across.
The win went to Lee Stange(12-4) who allowed no runs in 5 innings. Stange got
help from Vicente Romo who earned his 5th save. Tommy John(11-12) absorbed
the loss.
Don Gutteridge was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the
press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

Angels beat the Detroit Tigers by the count of 2 to 0.
Messersmith(13-11) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much
for the Detroit batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits
and 2 walks in 9 innings. Both teams totaled 5 hits on the afternoon.
Mickey Lolich(14-12) was the loser. Despite the loss, he struckout 10

Bob Allison launched 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Jim Perry completed the game
without help from the bullpen as the smoking-hot Minnesota Twins topped the
New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 5 to 2 at Metropolitan Stadium.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Allison. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 4th inning,
launched a three-run homer in the 6th inning and lined a one-base hit in the
8th inning. Minnesota rapped out 12 hits for the afternoon.
Perry(15-12) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Fritz
Peterson(16-12) was charged with the loss. Minnesota extended their winning
streak to 7 games. 'We're on quite a roll lately' said Billy Martin. 'I just
hope we can keep it going.'

Ed Brinkman had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Washington Senators rallied
impressively to win in dramatic style over Kansas City Royals, 6 to
4.
Washington had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they
scored 4 runs on 5 hits. The highlight belonged to Brinkman who silenced the
crowd when he stroked a one-base hit which was good for two runs. Washington
banged out 11 hits on the night.
The victory went to Joe Coleman(12-11) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. Coleman got help from Bob Humphreys who was credited with his 5th save.
Wally Bunker(6-25) ended up with the loss.
'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Coleman said,
'this was one of those times.'
