Third baseman Brooks Robinson cracked a homer and had 5 RBI and Jim Palmer
blanked California allowing just 1 hit as the very talented Baltimore Orioles
defeated the California Angels 8 to 0 at Anaheim Stadium.
Robinson had a big day against California. He lofted a three-run bomb in the
3rd inning and doubled bringing home two baserunners in the 7th inning.
Baltimore banged out 10 hits on the night.
For Palmer(18-7) it was his 3rd shutout this year. Tom Murphy(5-13) was tagged
with the loss. Baltimore continued their winning ways, with their streak now
at 6 games and counting.

Phil Niekro delivered 9 solid innings as the Atlanta Braves bested the Chicago
(NL) Cubs 1 to 0 at Wrigley Field.
Atlanta scored the only run of the game in the top of the 7th inning. After
an out was recorded, Bob Didier banged out a single, and an error was also
committed. Sonny Jackson next to the plate and he stroked a base-hit.
Niekro then reached on an error scoring the run. Chicago (NL) was set down
quietly in the bottom of the 9th.
It was the 3rd shutout of the year for Niekro(19-6). Bill Hands(18-10) was
charged with the loss. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not
allow an earned run in the game.

Right fielder Bobby Bonds had 2 base hits and Juan Marichal went the distance
at Shea Stadium as the San Francisco Giants beat the New York (NL) Mets by
the count of 4 to 2.
San Francisco promptly took the lead in their half of the first plating an
isolated run. San Francisco had just 4 hits for the night.
The victory was credited to Marichal(20-9) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Tom Seaver(13-12) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 9 innings and
surrendered just 4 hits and 3 walks.
