Steve Carlton carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning at Fulton Co. Stadium as
the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 2 to 1.
Carlton(17-11) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Atlanta offense. He
was stingy on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. The
left-handed Carlton lost his chance for a no-hitter when Bob Tillman homered
with nobody out in the 8th inning. The teams had been locked in a scoreless
duel until the 8th inning.
Pat Jarvis(6-6) was given the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 7 hits in 7 and 2/3
innings.

complete game as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Chicago (NL) Cubs by
the score of 9 to 1 at Candlestick Park.
Perry(18-11) had a solid outing for San Francisco. He surrendered 11 hits and
1 walk in 9 innings. San Francisco finished with 10 hits in the victory.
Fergie Jenkins(13-12) was the loser. Wth the win San Francisco now has a
