Andy Messersmith completed the game without help from the bullpen at Fenway
Park as the California Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 2 to 1.
California came up with 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning when they had 3

California. Neither team managed to score after the 4th inning.

Sam McDowell pitched a complete game and Jose Cardenal had 2 base hits and
scored 3 times as the Cleveland Indians bested the Kansas City Royals 8 to 1
at Municipal Stadium.
Cleveland went ahead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring one
runner using 3 hits. That early run support was all that McDowell(15-13)
required. Cleveland managed 13 hits in their victory.

Tommy John whiffed 10 batters and left fielder Carlos May left the yard and
had 3 RBI as the Chicago (AL) White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 9 to 1 at
Comiskey Park.
John(11-9) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 10
hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Chicago (AL) had 12 hits for the afternoon.
Mike Kilkenny(14-9) was tagged with the loss. He allowed Chicago (AL) 7 runs
in 3 and 1/3 innings of work. Don Gutteridge was asked about the performance
of John, 'He had his good stuff out there this afternoon. The fans really

Mike Cuellar mowed down 10 Minnesota batters and Don Buford had 2 base hits
and 2 RBI as the Baltimore Orioles came back to win one over Minnesota Twins,
5 to 4.
Baltimore scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning with 2 runs on 3 base
hits. Elrod Hendricks led off and he delivered a base-hit. Mark Belanger
next to the plate and he lined a one-base hit. Dave May then laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Buford stepped in and he slapped a single making Baltimore
the winners and sending the 50,936 fans home happy. Baltimore banged out 12
hits on the afternoon.
Cuellar(19-10), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Jim
Perry(13-11) absorbed the loss. 'That was exciting!,' Buford said. 'I would
have paid money to watch this one.'
