One run was the difference at The Astrodome as the Houston Astros defeated the
Chicago (NL) Cubs in 12 innings 4 to 3.
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Houston won it in
the 12th inning. Doug Rader drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Curt
Blefary stepped in and he ripped a base-hit. Blefary took second on the
throw. Ron Willis then reached on an error giving Houston the win as 22,407
happy fans joyfully celebrated. Houston had 13 hits overall, while Chicago
(NL) had 10.
The win went to Willis(2-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Phil
Regan(1-4) took the loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not
allowing an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.

Ron Fairly had 4 hits and scored 3 times and Mike Wegener went 9 strong
innings as the Montreal Expos outscored the Atlanta Braves 7 to 0.
Montreal took the lead off Ron Reed in the first inning plating one baserunner
on 2 hits. Ty Cline tripled. Gary Sutherland stepped into the batter's box
and he would ground out scoring the run. That early run support was all that
Wegener(9-8) required. Montreal managed 12 hits in their victory.
Reed(6-16) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 8 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

Gary Nolan took a no-hitter into the 9th inning at Crosley Field as the
Cincinnati Reds beat the New York (NL) Mets by the count of 3 to
0.
Nolan(12-8) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the
New York (NL) batters. He didn't allow much, just 1 hit and 6 walks in 9
innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.35 to 4.11. The right-handed Nolan lost a
no-hitter when Cleon Jones singled with nobody out in the 9th inning.
Cincinnati managed only 4 hits on the night.
Tom Seaver(11-11) absorbed the loss. Cincinnati now has a record of 57-44.
With the loss New York (NL) now has a record of 54-49.
