Bill Hands came through with a solid 9 innings at Wrigley Field where the
Chicago (NL) Cubs beat the hopeless San Diego Padres 5 to 1.
It was a good day for Chicago (NL) thanks to Ron Santo. He tripled which
brought home a run in the 1st inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd
inning. Chicago (NL) finished with 8 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Hands(16-7) who went the whole way allowing 1 run. Joe
Niekro(6-12) was given the loss. He allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

Montreal Expos coming out on top of the Houston Astros by the score of 2 to
1.
In the 2nd inning Montreal went on top for good scoring a single run. Houston
had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Dan McGinn preserved the game for Stoneman, recording his his 5th save.

Juan Marichal allowed Clyde King to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game
at Forbes Field as the San Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to
2.
Marichal(17-7) was very good in the win. He didn't give up much, just 7 hits
and no walks in 9 innings. Pittsburgh tried unsuccessfully to come back in
the 9th.
Dock Ellis(14-9) suffered the loss. Larry Shepard was subdued after the
ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more
fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks
me off!'
