Win:Ramos(2-2) Loss:Reed(1-4) Save:Granger(9th)
Homeruns- R.Staub(27th), M.Jones-2(13th)
In a close game it was the Cincinnati Reds 8, the pathetic Montreal Expos 6 at
Crosley Field.
Cincinnati had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning plating 3
runs on 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Fred Whitfield got things
going when he reached on an error. After another out, Bobby Tolan came to
bat and slapped a one-base hit. Alex Johnson then stroked a base-hit, and an
error was also committed, which scored a run. Tony Perez stepped in and he
was walked intentionally to load the bases. Lee May came to the plate and
drew a walk scoring another run. Johnny Bench kept the inning going and hit
a single scoring the final run of the inning. Montreal threatened in the 9th
but Cincinnati was able to put down the rally.
The win was credited to Pedro Ramos(2-2) who went 1/3 of an inning allowing no
runs. Wayne Granger earned his 9th save. Howie Reed(1-4) was hit with the
loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned
run in his 1 inning of work.
Mack Jones smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI but his offense was not enough to
carry Montreal to victory.
