Mike Cuellar pitched a 3 hit shutout as the spectacular Baltimore Orioles beat
the Kansas City Royals by a score of 1 to 0.
The game was won by Baltimore with a run in the top of the 9th inning. Don
Buford drew a walk. Two outs later Frank Robinson stepped up to the plate
and he ripped a base-hit scoring the run. Baltimore and Kansas City each
finished the night with 3 hits.
It was the 7th shutout of the year for Cuellar(17-9). Wally Bunker(5-20) was
given the loss. He pitched 9 innings giving up only 3 hits and 4
walks.
'Cuellar was the man tonight,' Earl Weaver said. 'He had just about every
pitch working.'

Ray Culp was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete
game as the Boston Red Sox topped the California Angels by a score of 7 to 4
at Anaheim Stadium.
California fell behind quickly as the Boston offense came through in the first
inning scoring 2 runners on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Reggie Smith
who deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run. Boston finished with 15 hits in the victory.
The victory went to Culp(7-14) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. The loss
was charged to Andy Messersmith(10-10). He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

Third baseman Larry Brown had 4 hits and 4 RBI and Sam McDowell racked up an
impressive total of 10 strikeouts at Municipal Stadium where the Cleveland
Indians beat the Chicago (AL) White Sox by the score of 8 to 1.
Brown helped send the fans home happy. He laced a base-hit in the 3rd inning,
slapped a one-base hit in the 5th inning, delivered a single scoring a run in
the 6th inning and tripled emptying the bases in the 7th inning. Cleveland
totaled 13 hits on the night.
The win was credited to McDowell(14-11) who went the whole way allowing 1 run.
Tommy John(9-9) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 7
walks in 6 innings.
'Everything felt great' McDowell said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody tonight.'
