Sonny Siebert recorded a complete game shutout and Mike Andrews smacked a
grand slam at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles by
the count of 7 to 0.
Andrews provided much of the offense. He doubled in the 5th inning and
cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun in the 6th inning. Boston banged
out 11 hits on the night.
It was the 4th shutout of the year for Siebert(12-6). Dave Leonhard(8-3) was
the loser. Boston scored big getting 6 runs off him in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Mickey Lolich was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Municipal Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the
Cleveland Indians 4 to 1.
Detroit took the lead for good in the 2nd inning when they came up with 2 runs
on 1 hit. That was all Lolich(9-10) needed. Detroit managed only 5 hits on
the night.
Luis Tiant(3-9) was the losing pitcher. Detroit now has a record of 51-45.
Cleveland has a record of 36-62, worst in the division after the loss.

Andy Messersmith went the distance at Anaheim Stadium as the Oakland Athletics
lost a heartbreaker to California Angels by the score of 3 to 2.
The game was won by California when they scored a run in the 9th inning.
After an out was recorded, Messersmith doubled. One out later, Jay Johnstone
came to the plate and was walked intentionally. Jim Fregosi then drew a walk
to load the bases. Rick Reichardt came up and he hit a single resulting in a
mighty exciting win for California and the 12,575 home town fans in
attendance. California finished with 10 hits in the victory.
Messersmith(10-9) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. The loss
was charged to Rollie Fingers(7-6) in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in
2 and 1/3 innings.

Right fielder Brant Alyea went deep and had 4 RBI as the Washington Senators
defeated the New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 6 to 5 at Yankee
Stadium.
Washington scored 5 runs in the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits. The
biggest moment was provided by Alyea who deflated the spirits of the home
town crowd when he smacked a three-run homer. Washington out-hit New York
(AL) for the game, 11 hits to 7.
Jim Shellenback(7-7) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory.
Dennis Higgins gained credit for his 10th save. Mike Kekich(3-10) suffered
