Mike Cuellar went 9 solid innings at Memorial Stadium as the blistering-hot
Baltimore Orioles beat the New York (AL) Yankees 2 to 0.
New York (AL) was unable to climb back into it after Baltimore went ahead for
good in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. That
early scoring was all that Cuellar(14-7) needed. Both teams' bats went to
sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that point.
Al Downing(4-6) was charged with the loss. 'Cuellar took our guys to school'
Ralph Houk said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a
whole lot easier!'

Catfish Hunter hurled a fine complete game shutout and Bert Campaneris had 2
base hits as the Oakland Athletics bested the Chicago (AL) White Sox 5 to 0
at Comiskey Park.
Hunter(8-9) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't give up much,
just 5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.32 to 4.08.
Oakland had 7 hits for the night.
Paul Edmondson(6-7) suffered the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 6 walks in 7
innings. Wth the win Oakland now has a record of a division leading 46-36.
With the loss Chicago (AL) now has a record of 42-44.

Candlestick Park.
San Francisco did all the necessary damage in the 7th inning when they tallied
4 runs on 6 hits. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
The winning pitcher was Juan Marichal(15-6) who allowed 1 run in 7 innings.
Frank Linzy preserved the game for Marichal, recording his his 6th save.
Larry Dierker(11-8) was hit with the loss.

Ron Fairly had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos topped the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 2 at Forbes Field.
Montreal brought 3 runs across the plate in the top of the 7th inning. The
key at-bat was by Bobby Wine who quieted the crowd when he smacked a single
bringing home two baserunners. Montreal managed 7 hits in their victory.
Gary Waslewski(3-9) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Roy
Face recorded the save, his 5th. Bob Moose(8-6) was given the loss. He gave
up 5 runs and 5 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.
