3,866 fans watched an exciting game at Comiskey Park. The Oakland Athletics
topped the Chicago (AL) White Sox by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.
The game was won by Oakland when they scored a run in the 9th inning. Reggie
Jackson doubled. Two outs later Dick Green came to the plate and was walked
intentionally. Rick Monday then was hit by a pitch. Phil Roof came up and
he was hit by a pitch scoring the run. Offensively, Oakland was a
juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
Rollie Fingers(7-5) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Jack
Hamilton(0-2) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk in 1
inning.

At R.F.K. Stadium, the Washington fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Mike
Paul(6-8) finally bested his Washington opposite, Jim Hannan(3-4), by the
score of 2 to 1.
Cleveland took the lead for good in the 2nd inning plating one baserunner
using 2 hits. For the game Cleveland out-hit Washington 11 to 8.
Paul got relief help from Ron Law who gained credit for his 2nd save. Hannan
took the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
For Cleveland the victory was a welcome one, indeed. They had been struggling
in their last ten games with a disappointing 2-8 record. With the loss
Washington now has a record of 50-39.

The Minnesota Twins defeated the struggling Kansas City Royals by a score of 8
to 5 at Metropolitan Stadium.
Bob Miller(7-5) was solid if not spectacular. He surrendered 6 hits and 4
walks in 6 innings. Minnesota and Kansas City each finished the night with 9
hits.
Jerry Crider preserved the game for Miller, recording his his 1st save. The
losing pitcher was Wally Bunker(5-15). He was touched for 3 homeruns in his

George Scott touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox outscored
the Detroit Tigers 7 to 5.
Lee Stange(10-2) pitched okay, well enough for the win. He went 6 and 2/3
innings and surrended up 9 hits and 3 walks. Detroit had 10 hits in the game
while Boston had 7, but Boston had the more timely hits.
Stange got help from Vicente Romo who was credited with his 3rd save. Pat
Dobson(6-4) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around, surrendering 5
runs in 4 innings.
