In a lop-sided win the Houston Astros plated 5 runs in the 9th inning and
ripped the league door-mat San Diego Padres by a 8 to 3 count.
Houston went ahead for good in the top of the 4th inning plating an isolated
run. San Diego was out-hit by Houston, 13 hits to 7.
Denny Lemaster(12-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings
and allowing 3 runs. Al Santorini(3-12) ended up with the loss. With this
win, Houston has a 37-46 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss
San Diego now has a record of 28-56, worst in the division.

Bobby Bonds smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the San Francisco Giants
defeated the Atlanta Braves by the score of 10 to 1 at Candlestick Park.
It was a good day for San Francisco thanks to Bonds. He laced a one-base hit
scoring a run in the 2nd inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 4th inning and
bombed a two-run dinger in the 8th inning. San Francisco had 11 hits for the
afternoon while Atlanta had 6.
The victory was credited to Mike McCormick(7-5) who went 7 innings, allowing 1
run. Pat Jarvis(3-3) was tagged with the loss. San Francisco knocked him
around a bit, as he gave up 5 runs in 2 innings.
Bonds said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
today. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'

Bob Gibson(14-7) was on top of his game in St. Louis as he tossed a beauty of
a no-hitter against the Chicago (NL) Cubs. The St. Louis Cardinals won by a
score of 1 to 0.
Gibson was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Chicago (NL) batters
down like so many dominoes. He allowed Chicago (NL) just one walk. The
tension started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd
was electrified. St. Louis had a total of 7 hits for the game.
The losing pitcher was Rich Nye(2-6). What a show!' Red Schoendienst said.
'Gibson was great out there -- I'm happy that he got it.'

Chuck Taylor tossed a complete game and Lou Brock went deep and had 3 RBI as
the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago (NL) Cubs 9 to 3 at Busch
Stadium.
St. Louis took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they
came up with 2 runs on 2 hits. The biggest moment was provided by Brock who
brought a roar from the partisan Busch Stadium fans when he doubled which was
good for two runs. St. Louis had 16 hits for the afternoon.
The victory went to Taylor(6-6) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Ken
Johnson(1-2) was given the loss. He allowed St. Louis 6 runs in 4 innings of
work.
