Boston Red Sox broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 9 to 8
win over the Cleveland Indians and sending their hometown fans home
smiling.
The game was won by Boston with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. After
an out was recorded, Mike Andrews drew a walk. Carl Yastrzemski stepped into
the batter's box and he drew a walk. Reggie Smith then drew a walk to load
the bases. Rico Petrocelli came up and he drew a walk making Boston the
winners and sending the 10,754 fans home happy. Boston had 16 hits overall,
while Cleveland had 9.
The win went to Vicente Romo(5-4) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Horacio
Pina(1-2) was charged with the loss in relief. He couldn't find the strike
zone and allowed 5 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Roger Nelson hurled a fine complete game shutout as the Kansas City Royals
defeated the Oakland Athletics 7 to 0 at Oakland Coliseum.
Nelson(9-4) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up
much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Kansas City had 7 hits for the
afternoon.
The loss was charged to Catfish Hunter(6-8). He served up 3 homeruns in his 8
and 2/3 innings.

Bob Miller(6-5) and Jim McGlothlin(3-7) dueled it out with Miller and the
Minnesota Twins coming out on top of the California Angels by the score of 3
to 0.
Minnesota took the lead off McGlothlin in the first inning when they came up
with 2 runs on 3 hits. That early run support was all that Miller required.
After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.

The hometown crowd was rewarded with a dramatic ending, as the Detroit Tigers
staged a comeback win over the New York (AL) Yankees by the count of 5 to
4.
Detroit won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning plating 3
runs utilizing 3 base hits. Al Kaline opened up the inning nicely when he
lined a single. Norm Cash stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk.
Willie Horton then reached on an error. Bill Freehan followed next and he
doubled plating two runs. Don Wert dug into the batters box next, but he
struck out. Ike Brown joined his teammates in the uprising and delivered a
single resulting in a mighty exciting win for Detroit and the 36,679 home
town fans in attendance. New York (AL) out-hit Detroit 13 to 7, but Detroit
ended up with more runs.
The victory was credited to Mike Kilkenny(10-4) who went 2/3 of an inning,
allowing no runs. Mike Kekich(1-9) was the loser. He allowed 5 runs and 6
hits in 8 innings.
