The Cleveland Indians nipped the Boston Red Sox 5 to 4 at Fenway Park in a
hard fought contest.
Cleveland scored the deciding run in the top of the 8th inning. Frank Baker
doubled. After an out was recorded, Vicente Romo then let a pitch get away
from him. After another out, Romo then had one get away for a wild pitch
scoring the run. Boston had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The win went to Horacio Pina(1-1) who allowed no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.
The loss was charged to Romo(4-4) in relief. He pitched 2 innings allowing 3
hits and 1 walk.

Jim Perry went the distance and Rod Carew touched them all and had 3 RBI at
Anaheim Stadium as the Minnesota Twins beat the California Angels by the
count of 8 to 3.
Minnesota scored 3 runs in the decisive 3rd inning. After an out was
recorded, Tony Oliva jump-started the rally as he drew a walk. Oliva stole
second with some aggressive base running. One out later, Rich Reese was
walked intentionally. Graig Nettles followed next and he smacked a single
driving in a run. Leo Cardenas came up to bat and doubled accounting for two
more runs. That early scoring held up. Minnesota totaled 16 hits on the
night.
The winning pitcher was Perry(9-6) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Steve
Kealey(0-4) was charged with the loss. He allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 6
and 2/3 innings.

First baseman Joe Pepitone homered and had 2 RBI as the New York (AL) Yankees
topped the Detroit Tigers by a score of 9 to 5 at Tiger Stadium.
New York (AL) scored 7 runs in the 6th inning when they had 5 base hits. The
crucial at-bat was provided by Jimmie Hall who deflated the mood of the
partisan fans when he tripled which was good for two runs. New York (AL) had
10 hits overall, while Detroit had 6.
Bill Burbach(1-2) allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Burbach was helped out by Lindy McDaniel who recorded his 2nd save.
Fred Lasher(2-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He was unable to control
the New York (AL) offense and allowed 5 hits and 4 walks in 2 and 2/3
