Ron Santo touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Chicago (NL) Cubs defeated the
Atlanta Braves by a score of 4 to 3 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Fergie Jenkins(8-5) gave a fine effort for Chicago (NL). He went 7 and 2/3
innings allowing 4 hits and 2 walks and served up 2 'big flies'. Atlanta had
a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
Phil Regan recorded the save, his 4th. Pat Jarvis(1-2) ended up with the
loss. 'This was a tough loss,' said Lum Harris, 'the kind that sticks with
you for awhile.'

Chris Cannizzaro left the yard at San Diego Stadium as the San Diego Padres
beat the Montreal Expos 5 to 1.
San Diego set the tone of the game in the first inning plating one baserunner
utilizing 2 base hits. San Diego finished with 9 hits while Montreal ended
up with 4.
The win was credited to Clay Kirby(4-7) who went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 1
run. Bill Stoneman(0-7) was tagged with the loss. Although losing the
contest, he whiffed 8 batters in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Larry Dierker had a complete game as the Houston Astros defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 10 to 4 at The Astrodome.
Houston wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they scored 4
runs on 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Doug Rader who brought a
roar from the partisan Astrodome fans when he ripped a one-base hit scoring
two baserunners. Houston had a total of 14 hits for the game.
Dierker(7-7) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Dock
Ellis(10-3) ended up with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits and 3
walks in 5 innings.

One run was the difference at Tiger Stadium as the Seattle Pilots defeated the
Detroit Tigers 5 to 4.
The deciding run was scored by Seattle in the top of the 8th. John Kennedy
clubbed a solo home run. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but
they came up short.
The victory was credited to George Brunet(3-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 4
runs. Jim Bouton earned his 9th save. Mickey Lolich(7-5) was the loser. He
served up 4 gopher balls in 7 and 2/3 innings.
Mayo Smith was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press
box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'
