Rick Wise tossed a shutout at Candlestick Park as the Philadelphia Phillies
beat the San Francisco Giants 5 to 0.
Wise(4-8) put on a good performance. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just
6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.85. Philadelphia
rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon.
Gaylord Perry(10-5) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 8
innings.

53,384 fans watched an exciting game at Dodger Stadium. The Montreal Expos
topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.
Although Mike Wegener(5-5) had a rough time of it, he still managed to pick up
the win. He gave up 4 runs, 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings and surrendered
2 'long-bombs'. Los Angeles made it exciting in the 9th, but they were
unable to push the needed runs across.
Wegener was helped out by Dan McGinn who recorded his 4th save. The loss was
charged to Bill Singer(6-6). He gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 9 innings.
Walter Alston was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

Jim Wynn cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Denny Lemaster pitched a
complete game at The Astrodome as the Houston Astros pulled off a dramatic
comeback beating the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 9 to 7.
Houston won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 5
runners on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Wynn who came through
for the home fans when he belted a three-run homer. Both teams ended up with
10 hits on the afternoon.
Lemaster(7-7) allowed 7 runs on the game. Joe Hoerner(0-1) was the losing
pitcher in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,' Wynn said. 'Much of the
credit goes to our fans - they were with us the whole way.'
