Right fielder Walt Williams had 2 base hits as the Chicago (AL) White Sox
defeated the Boston Red Sox 2 to 1 at Fenway Park.
Joe Horlen(3-7) pitched a solid game. He went 5 innings and surrended up 2
hits and 3 walks lowering his ERA from 4.29 to 4.01. Boston made it exciting
in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Horlen got relief help from Wilbur Wood who gained credit for his 9th save.
Jim Lonborg(1-4) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 2 runs and 5 hits in
5 and 1/3 innings.
'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Dick Williams said. 'It's
bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating
yourselves, that's really bad.'

Tom Tresh smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers bested the
California Angels in 14 innings 7 to 4 at Anaheim Stadium.
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Detroit ended up
winning it in the 14th inning. Don Wert led off and keyed the rally when he
lined a base-hit. After an out was recorded, Gutierrez took his lead and
swiped second. Bob Priddy then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch.
Mickey Stanley followed and he stroked a single scoring a run. Tresh stepped
into the box and smashed a two-run homer. The California batters didn't put
up a fight in the bottom of the 14th.
Tom Timmermann(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 and 1/3 innings and
allowing no runs. Priddy(1-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He was not
very effective, surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

Rich Reese had 2 base hits as the Minnesota Twins defeated the New York (AL)
Yankees in 20 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Metropolitan Stadium.
The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Minnesota came out on top in
the 20th inning. Tony Oliva got things going when he drew a walk. Harmon
Killebrew was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Reese then drew a
walk. Bill Burbach then threw a high and inside pitch that got by the
catcher; it was ruled a passed ball. Cesar Tovar came up to bat and banged
out a single knocking in a run. Tovar swiped second base. Leo Cardenas
stepped into the batter's box and he lined a one-base hit making Minnesota
the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Minnesota lit up
the scoreboard in the 20th inning plating 2 runs. New York (AL) was out-hit
by Minnesota, 23 hits to 19.
The victory was credited to Dean Chance(1-1) who went 4 innings, allowing 1
run. Burbach(0-2) took the loss in relief.
