22,154 fans were treated to a fine game at Fenway Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Boston Red Sox snapped their 6
game slide and won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
Sparky Lyle(1-0) earned the victory with a fine relief performance. He gave
up just 1 hit and no walks in 2 innings improving his ERA from 3.31 to 2.95.
Chicago (AL) had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Lyle got help from Sonny Siebert who earned his 1st save. Gary Bell(0-2) was
the loser in relief. 'We really needed this win' said Dick Williams. 'That
first drink of water at the end of a drought sure does taste good!'

At Anaheim Stadium the California Angels outscored the Detroit Tigers 6 to
3.
Rudy May(3-5) earned his pay with a solid performance for California. He
allowed 7 hits and no walks in 6 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 homeruns.
California took care of Detroit with no trouble in the 9th.
May got relief help from Ken Tatum who gained credit for his 6th save. Earl

Leo Cardenas hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the Minnesota Twins
destroyed the New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 13 to 3 at Metropolitan
Stadium.
New York (AL) fell behind quickly as the Minnesota offense came through in the
first inning when they exploded for 11 runs on 9 hits. That scoring would be
all that was needed. Minnesota had 13 hits overall, while New York (AL) had
8.
The victory went to Bob Miller(3-5) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Al Downing(4-3) ended up with the loss. He gave up 6 runs and 4 hits

Philadelphia Phillies defeated the floundering San Diego Padres by the score
of 2 to 1 at Shibe Park.
Philadelphia had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning. The
game was a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Johnson(1-1) allowed 1 run on the game. Dick Kelley(3-9) absorbed the loss.
