Roger Nelson completed the game without help from the bullpen at Municipal
Stadium as the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox by the count of 6
to 4.
Kansas City had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 runs.
Mike Fiore led off and started the attack as he reached on an error. Lou
Piniella next to the plate and he reached on an error. Joe Foy then drew a
walk to load the bases. Two outs later Ellie Rodriguez came to the plate and
lined a base-hit scoring two teammates. Kansas City had only 5 hits for the
night.
The winning pitcher was Nelson(6-2) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Ray
Culp(3-9) was the loser. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 8 innings and
not allowing an earned run.

Al Kaline hit 2 doubles at Oakland Coliseum where the Detroit Tigers beat the
Oakland Athletics in 12 innings 3 to 1.
The score was tied at 1 after nine. Finally, Detroit pulled the game out in
the 12th inning. After two outs Ike Brown was the sparkplug when he doubled.
Kaline was next and he doubled bringing in a run. Norm Cash then was walked
intentionally. Jim Northrup was up next and he laced a base-knock scoring
the final run of the inning. Both teams finished the game with 10 hits.
The win was credited to Pat Dobson(3-3) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing no
runs. John Hiller was credited with his 1st save. Rollie Fingers(2-3) took
the loss in relief.
