Catcher Jerry Grote rocketed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Tom Seaver delivered
9 solid innings as the New York (NL) Mets topped the San Diego Padres by a
score of 3 to 2 at Shea Stadium.
Grote had a good evening at the plate. He cracked a two-run shot in the 4th
inning and hit a bases-empty home run in the 7th inning. New York (NL)
finished with just 6 hits in the victory.
Seaver(5-5) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The loss was charged
to Al Santorini(3-5). 'Seaver took our guys to school' Preston Gomez said.
'Too bad he doesn't pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'

Bill Singer was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game at Jarry Park as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal
Expos by the count of 5 to 4.
Singer(5-5) earned his pay with a solid performance for Los Angeles. He went
9 innings and surrended up 11 hits and no walks. Montreal threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.
Gary Waslewski(0-5) was charged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9
hits and 5 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said
Gene Mauch 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'

Denny Lemaster dominated striking out 11 Philadelphia batters and Denis Menke
had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia
Phillies by a score of 5 to 1.
Lemaster(5-6) looked very much in control throughout the night. He
surrendered only 9 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.93
to 3.56. Houston totaled 12 hits on the night.
Rick Wise(3-7) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and
3 walks in 8 innings. 'Everything felt great' Lemaster said. 'I had a good
fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody tonight.'

Jim Hickman had 2 base hits at Candlestick Park where the Chicago (NL) Cubs
beat the San Francisco Giants in 12 innings by the score of 7 to 4.
The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Chicago (NL) won the
hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Ron Santo led off and got things
going when he doubled. Ernie Banks followed and he drew a walk. Hickman
then drew a walk to load the bases. After an out was recorded, Don Young
stepped up to the plate and he lined a single scoring two baserunners. Paul
Popovich came to the plate and laced a one-base hit scoring the final run of
the inning. Chicago (NL) finished with 16 hits in the victory.
Ken Holtzman(4-5) went 11 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Holtzman
was helped out by Phil Regan who recorded his 3rd save. Ray Sadecki(0-2)
suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 4 hits and 2
