Win:Bunker(1-3) Loss:Wilhelm(1-4)
Wally Bunker didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning as the Kansas City Royals
beat the California Angels by a score of 2 to 1.
Bunker(1-3) escaped virtually unscathed against the California hitters. He
didn't give up much, just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Bunker chalked up
10 strikeouts dropping his ERA from 5.14 to 4.14. The right-handed Bunker
lost his chance for a no-hitter when Jay Johnstone singled with one out in
the 6th inning. California threatened in the 9th but Kansas City was able to
put down the rally.
The loss was charged to Hoyt Wilhelm(1-4) in relief. 'Bunker pitched a gem of
a game', Lefty Phillips recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the
entire game.'
