Sam McDowell allowed just 3 hits at Municipal Stadium as the Cleveland Indians
beat the Boston Red Sox 4 to 1.
Cleveland jumped out to the early lead in the first inning plating 2 runs on 2
hits. Jose Cardenal started the inning off right when he drew a walk. After
an out was recorded, Frank Baker came to bat and hit a bases-empty home run.
Tony Horton then cracked a solo homerun. That early scoring was all that
McDowell(1-0) needed. Cleveland had just 6 hits for the afternoon.
Ray Culp(0-1) was hit with the loss. He surrended 3 homeruns in his 6
innings. 'Everything felt great' McDowell said. 'I had a good fastball, I
felt I could throw it by everybody today.'

In a close game the Oakland Athletics put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 2nd
inning and got by the Kansas City Royals by the score of 8 to 6.
Oakland came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th
inning with 2 runs. Bert Campaneris led off and started the attack as he
drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Reggie Jackson came up and he drew a
walk. Sal Bando got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on
strikes. Danny Cater was up next and he doubled bringing in two baserunners.
Kansas City out-hit Oakland 12 to 6, but Oakland ended up with more runs.
Rollie Fingers(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Dave
Morehead(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He was not very effective,
surrendering 4 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Denny McLain delivered 9 solid innings and Ike Brown had 2 base hits at Tiger
Stadium where the Detroit Tigers beat the New York (AL) Yankees 6 to

Detroit tallied 2 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. They would
prove to be the difference in the contest. Detroit rapped out 11 hits for
the afternoon.
