Tom Seaver pitched a 2 hit shutout as the New York (NL) Mets defeated the
Montreal Expos by a score of 2 to 0 at Shea Stadium.
Seaver(1-0) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 2 hits
and 3 walks in 9 innings. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 3rd
inning with no runs scored after that point.
Gary Waslewski(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 4

Steve Carlton tossed a complete game shutout and Mike Shannon collected 2
extra-base hits at Busch Stadium as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 9 to 0.
Carlton(1-0) was very good in the win. He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 4 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings. St. Louis managed 15 hits in their
victory.
Bob Veale(0-1) suffered the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6
runs in 3 innings.

Left fielder Jesus Alou had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Houston Astros crushed the
San Diego Padres 11 to 1.
Alou provided much of the offense. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in
the 1st inning, laced a single resulting in a run in the 5th inning, ripped a
one-base hit which brought home a run in the 7th inning and laced a
base-knock in the 9th inning. Houston finished with 16 hits while San Diego
ended up with 4.
Denny Lemaster(1-0) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. The
loss was charged to Al Santorini(0-1). He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings giving
up 8 hits and 3 walks.

Willie McCovey homered and Ron Herbel came through with a solid 9 innings as
the San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves by a score of 5 to 4.
San Francisco erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning plating 2
runs. After an out was recorded, Ron Hunt was the sparkplug when he drew a
walk. Willie Mays stepped up next and he smashed a two-run homer. The
Atlanta batters went down meekly in the bottom of the 9th.
The victory went to Herbel(1-0) who went the distance allowing 4 runs. The
losing pitcher was Milt Pappas(0-1). He gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 7 and
1/3 innings.
